Enrollment and Attendance FAQs
Who is eligible to attend the Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA)?
Any student in grades K–12 who resides in Wisconsin and who also completes an application during the annual state-mandated open enrollment window (February–April) is eligible for full-time enrollment. Part-time enrollment is available for 4K students.
However, some exceptions allow students to apply outside of the three-month open enrollment window through an alternative open enrollment process. For complete details on the current open enrollment process, including how to submit an alternative open enrollment application, please visit How to Enroll.
How many of my children can attend WIVA?
Because WIVA provides the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple children in the program.
What does it cost to attend WIVA?
Because WIVA is a public virtual school, there is no tuition. We provide Wisconsin-licensed teachers and instructional materials. Families are responsible for providing some common household materials (such as printer ink and paper). Our enrollment consultants can help address your technological and computer questions and needs.
How much time will my child spend online?
In the younger grades, many online lessons include offline work. Students in grades 3–5 spend no more than 15 to 30% of their school time on the computer. Screen time increases in middle school to 50 to 70%, and by high school, students spend at least 80% of their time online. 4K students are expected to spend less time on screens with more emphasis on hands-on learning and offline play-based activities.
What is the attendance policy?
As Wisconsin public school students, all WIVA students must comply with the state-required minimum number of instructional hours.
What should I do if my child has to miss school due to an illness or appointment?
To report a student absent, please contact the attendance line at 608.838.9482 extension 0 or email the attendance office at wiattendance@wivcs.org. To report a future absence for a student, please complete the Planned Absence Form. For multi-day absences, we encourage families to email the student’s course teachers as well.
Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
The school calendar includes school holidays or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Parents are encouraged to contact their student’s teacher if they plan a vacation that does not coordinate with the school calendar.
