The EdTech Backlash: Why Not All Technology is Created Equal

Parents, policymakers, and educators around the country continue to raise concerns regarding technology in K-12 education, a movement becoming known as the “edtech backlash.” Within arguments surrounding excessive technology spending, AI use and the impact of educational apps, however, one critical distinction is getting lost: not all technology is created equal.

The real question isn’t whether technology belongs in schools; it’s whether it serves a meaningful educational purpose. The U.S. Department of Education recently responded to growing concerns with guidance on how to navigate technology in education, calling for a focus on instructional value over recreational engagement.

Education technology doesn’t have to take away from teacher-led instruction. In fact, well-designed tools are actually meant to enhance it. At Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA), technology is used to support the flexible, personalized learning environment that our students chose virtual learning for. If educational technology is eliminated, so are the opportunities that our students depend on.

One of our primary goals at WIVA is to prepare students for life beyond high school, whether their future involves higher education or jumping right into the workforce. This includes setting them up for success in a technology-driven world. AI use has become increasingly common, and education is the first step to help students protect their personal information, recognize bias, and evaluate digital content with critical thinking.

Teaching digital responsibility doesn’t mean encouraging unlimited screen time or embracing every new tool, but instead encouraging students to use technology safely, ethically, and purposefully.

Concerns driving the edtech backlash are legitimate, but rejecting technology completely may not be the answer. At WIVA, we prioritize student well-being and provide high-quality education over novelty and convenience. Our goal is to offer smart, intentional use of technology, and not less opportunity for the students who need it most.
