A Day in the Life at Wisconsin Virtual Academy: How a Senior Balances Classes and International Soccer

Stories & Spotlights
A soccer, trophy and soccer cleat

For most high school seniors, the day revolves around classes, homework, and time with friends. For Marius Aiyenero, a senior at Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA), the schedule looks very different.

His days are built around three constants: training, schoolwork, and family, all while competing at an elite level of international soccer.

It’s a routine that demands discipline, flexibility, and a strong support system. And it’s one he’s refined over years of balancing academics with a rapidly rising athletic career.

Built Around the Game

Marius grew up in a soccer-focused family, where the sport was part of daily life from an early age. What started as casual games in the street quickly evolved into something more serious. Under the guidance of his father, Henry (who also coached him) Marius began developing not just technical skills, but the discipline required to compete at a high level.

By middle school, that commitment intensified.

“As training picked up, time became the biggest challenge,” Marius explains. “I wasn’t able to be in a physical classroom as much, but I still had to keep my grades at a high standard.”

That turning point in seventh and eighth grade led to a pivotal decision: transitioning to online learning.

Why Virtual Learning Made the Difference

At WIVA, Marius found a structure that worked with his schedule, not against it.

Virtual learning gave him the flexibility to train, travel, and compete without falling behind academically. But it’s not just about convenience. It requires intentional planning, strong communication, and personal accountability.

His day is carefully organized into three core parts:

  • Practice: Mornings and afternoons are dedicated to training sessions, conditioning, or traveling for games.
  • Schoolwork: Between training blocks, Marius logs in to complete coursework, often working ahead when travel demands increase.
  • Family: Evenings are reserved for time at home: an essential reset that keeps everything in balance.

“The biggest thing is having a plan,” he says. “If you set specific times for what you need to do, it saves you time and keeps you focused.”

That structure is reinforced by consistent communication with teachers and support from learning coaches, ensuring he stays on track no matter where soccer takes him.

A Global Stage and a Grounded Perspective

In late 2025, Marius’s hard work paid off in a major way: he earned a spot on Canada’s U17 national team and traveled to Qatar for international competition.

The moment he found out was unforgettable.

“I was about to train, and my coach asked to see me,” he recalls. “When I got the news, the first people I called were my family. That made it even more special.”

Competing on a global stage—playing in front of thousands of fans, staying in international hotels, and representing his country—was surreal. But even as the experience expanded his world, it reinforced something closer to home. “Every moment was something I’ll always remember,” he says. “But having that balance with school and family made it possible.”

The Role of Family in Every Step

Behind Marius’s success is a constant: his family. His father, Henry, has played a central role not just as an early coach, but as a steady guide through every stage of his journey. From backyard games to international competition, Henry emphasized the importance of balance, organization, and putting family first.

That support extended into academics as well. Henry helps track assignments, communicates with teachers, and ensures Marius stays ahead when travel schedules become demanding.

“There’s always someone looking out for him,” Henry says. “Whether it’s school or soccer, it’s about keeping everything balanced.”

Looking Ahead

Now in his final months of high school, Marius is preparing for his next chapter. He’s applying to colleges, exploring opportunities with new soccer clubs, and working toward graduation.

As he reflects on his journey, a few key themes stand out: structure, discipline, and the people who supported him along the way. “Surrounding yourself with the right people makes all the difference,” he says. “If you have that, you can achieve a lot.”

His experience is also a testament to what’s possible when education adapts to meet students where they are. Through WIVA, Marius was able to pursue ambitious goals without sacrificing his academics, or his connection to family.
