Sid’s Story: How Virtual Learning Unlocked a World of Success at WIVA
Every student deserves a learning environment where they can truly shine. For Sid, a bright and creative student, finding that perfect fit was a journey. His experience is a powerful reminder of how virtual learning, when truly tailored to individual needs, can transform academic challenges into soaring success, fostering growth far beyond the classroom walls.
The Search for the Right Fit: When Traditional School Fell Short
For a long time, traditional school wasn’t quite working for Sid. His mom, Jennifer, recalls the struggles, noting that the traditional in-person school model had difficulty accommodating Sid’s needs, and he faced unkind behavior and felt isolated from his peers. Routine requests, like accessing large print or having text read aloud, became daily hurdles. Sid also required tools like a larger screen to better follow along with closed captioning, but the system was slow to respond or adjust. He felt that traditional settings simply didn’t grasp how his disability impacted his learning. The rigidity of the system meant his unique needs weren’t consistently met, leading to frustration for both Sid and his family.
The WIVA Difference: Tailored Support and Unlocked Potential
Everything changed when Sid joined WIVA (Wisconsin Virtual Academy). Jennifer beams, sharing how WIVA actively “went out of their way to find things that work for him.” This wasn’t just about basic accommodations; it was about genuine understanding and proactive solutions. Sid received the tools he needed for notes and studying, and crucial adaptations like Bluetooth connectivity to send audio directly to his hearing aids, along with reliable captioning and text-to-speech options.
The impact was almost immediate. Sid’s academic performance “started skyrocketing” once he joined WIVA. He achieved something he hadn’t in traditional school: he joined the National Honor Society, which opened doors to volunteer opportunities and community service. WIVA’s encouragement went further, prompting him to explore computer and college programs through MATC, allowing him to take “classes that are more college based,” including animation and landscape design.
Personal—and Academic—Growth
Along with academic success, WIVA’s supportive environment fostered remarkable personal growth for Sid. His communication skills flourished within the virtual community. He proudly states, he’s now “better at communicating, I can do more than just spit out random words. I can have a conversation and go from starting point to ending point.” Jennifer, witnessing this transformation, watched his confidence grow “tremendously,” noting that he’s now “not afraid to ask questions and is always willing to go back to restate it in another way.” He also learned to better read social cues, sparking deeper, more engaged classroom conversations.
Sid also discovered a vibrant creative outlet. Inspired by his anime club, he penned a short novel, “The Lost Princess of Linagria,” using AI tools to assist with mechanics. He also writes music and enjoys sharing these passions in clubs like anime and costume art, where he’s made many friends. His teachers at WIVA play a significant role, not only providing excellent instruction but also offering “awesome recommendations” and showing a genuine interest in his life, something Jennifer notes was often missing in traditional settings.
Sid’s involvement with the Wisconsin Deaf-Blind Technical Assistance Project and his various computer and college classes are propelling him towards a career as a graphic design artist, underscored by recent summer jobs and an internship. He’s built strong connections in his virtual math class and even attended prom with his friends, illustrating the vibrant community that can thrive online.
“Go for it”
For other students and families considering virtual schooling, Sid’s message is clear and inspiring: “You don’t know what you’re missing, go for it.” His mom, a therapist herself, frequently recommends virtual schooling to families who are interested in more personlized education that meets their child’s unique needs, having seen how well they do.
Sid’s story is a compelling testament to the power of a student-centered approach in virtual learning. When schools are willing to adapt, provide flexible technology, and foster a caring community, they can unlock incredible academic, social, and personal growth for students with diverse needs, truly preparing them for a future full of opportunity and success.
