Friends Two Blocks Away, Connected by Online School: How WIVA Helped a Friendship Thrive
When people picture online school, they often imagine students learning alone—heads down, screens glowing, not much social activity. But for Jadel and Chloe, both 11th graders at Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA), their online school experience has been anything but isolating.
In fact, their friendship—now four years strong—was sparked in a WIVA English class back in 7th grade. “We met in an after-hours English class,” Jadel recalls. Chloe remembers it a little more specifically: “We met at the end of English class back in 7th grade with Ms. McDermot.” That moment of connection sparked a bond that has only deepened with time.
Today, Jadel and Chloe not only share classes at WIVA, they also live just two blocks away from each other in Milwaukee, Wis. They’ve built a rhythm to their week that mirrors a typical in-person school friendship. “We talk to each other every day and chat online while playing video games,” Jadel says. Chloe adds, “We have a weekly gaming night, and we use Discord to stay in touch. We have each other’s numbers, but we mainly use Discord to communicate.”
Online School, Real Connections
For both teens, being able to take classes together has played a big role in staying motivated. “It helps when we’re in the same class.”
While online school doesn’t feature the bustling hallways of a traditional school building, school leaders and teachers create space for meaningful connections. “Jadel and other students I have met here at WIVA have made schooling more enjoyable and made me look forward to seeing my friends in class,” Chloe says.
Different Kind of Social Confidence
Interestingly, Chloe notes that online school has actually helped her develop communication skills in a way that traditional school didn’t. “I get quite shy in person, but when I talk to other students in chat or on mic, I feel more comfortable speaking than I would in person,” she says.
Jadel doesn’t feel that online school has especially changed her communication style, but she’s clear about the role friendship plays in her WIVA experience: “It makes going to class more enjoyable.”
School-Life Balance, Online Style
Jadel and Chloe haven’t been drawn to in-person WIVA events so far, but they are thinking about going to prom next year. Outside of classes, their friendship is filled with the kind of things you’d expect from any two high schoolers who live nearby—study sessions, daily chats, and summer plans. “We plan to go to the Wisconsin State Fair together,” Jadel says.
A Parent’s Perspective
From the viewpoint of Jadel’s mom, Teshawn, the online school model has exceeded expectations. “I’ve noticed improvements in her grades and increased interaction during class,” Teshawn shares. Her initial hesitation—that her daughter might feel like just a number—has faded. Her advice to other parents and guardians? “Stay engaged with your students, understand their needs, and don’t hesitate to contact counselors or teachers if you have any questions.”
While peer relationships weren’t a major factor in their decision to enroll in WIVA, they recognize the benefit. Jadel’s connection with Chloe has helped her stay grounded and socially connected—even outside a brick-and-mortar school.
Redefining the “Typical” High School Experience
From working side by side during classwork to hanging out IRL just blocks away from each other, Chloe and Jadel prove that friendships in online school are not only possible—they’re powerful.
“Do not be afraid to socialize with your peers,” Chloe advises other students considering online school. Because the truth is, at WIVA, students like Chloe and Jadel are living proof that friendship doesn’t need a hallway—it just needs a chance to connect.
